Final Mask

Here is the finished mask. I had a few issues with the clear but other than running out of clear coat and having to switch brands, the mask turned out nice.

I had to put a little extra elbow grease into the project. I thought I could get away with 2 light coats but I managed to burn through the clear when I was buffing, so I had to wetsand and then spray some black to fix the burn to white.

I went to Hub City to get more hardener, because I had enough clear and activator to clear a few more helmets but the new VOC laws came in effect and I can't buy any more of the product so I had to change brand. On a good note, It worked real well. 

I have the mask for sale so hopefully it will go quick. Either way it is a good piece for my website.

True Fire Goaliemask

In my quest to master fire, I started a goalie mask on the weekend. I have been working on it for the las t few days.

Tonight I painted the yellow to create layered flames and then applied orange candy on top. I had some trouble with my airbrush spitting yesterday, so I put that one to soak and pulled out another tonight. I am happy with the way it is going.

Tomorrow I will highlight flames and add cand red on the ends with purple tips. Hopefully I can clear Thursday night.

 

Practice Time

I spent a little more time practicing fire and skulls. I worked on paint consistancy and air pressure to get fine lines.

Work in Progress

This is a piece I am working on for fun. I have started on the flames and am currently working on the skull. I will go back and forth with white and black for the skull and when the skull is done I will finnish the fire.

I started this for the practice both for the color mixing, consistancy, fire and working with detail. I am working and trying all types of templates for the fire.

Helmet

I continue to work on the true fire effect. Here are a few pics of a helmet I recently painted. This was probably my fourth attempt with this helmet. There are section that I like and parts I would change.

I have the colours and sequence sorted out and am confident I will be able to consistantly reproduce the colour. I will continue to work on the flames. Practice makes perfect.

This is a great effect and I am hoping to get a lot of requests for this style.

More Fire

In my quest to master true fire, I continue to practice. Again, last night I went in search of something black to practice on. I found a old rubber boot. I have the colors and sequence down but I still have to work on the flames. It is getting easier but practice, practice, practice. 

Although there is no right way or wrong way, painting fire is understanding how it works. I have been working on this for a bit and the secret is the layering of the paint and colors. That means cleaning the airbrush a lot. 

True Fire using Autoair Paint

Well its been since before Christmas since my last post and actually I have not touched my airbrush since last year. It was time I got busy again and my quest to master True Fire.

I searched the house for a black item to paint and finally found a old beer ice bucket. This would be perfect to practice fire again before getting back to my old helmet again.

I have repainted it 3 times already. I just wasn't happy with the effect.


So I started painting and after a couple hours I ended up with a job that I am happy with. There are a few tweeks I could work on but overall I am happy with the final result.

After quite a few trials, I think I have both the paint and step process locked in. I just need to practice the style more to make the process more fluid. I will create a step by step process when I paint the helmet and will post.

This bucket has not been cleared yet. Unlike Uros, AA Candy needs to be clear coated to get the candy effect. You can see that the colors are already vibrant so they should really pop out when cleared. I will clear coat the bucket when I clear the helmet.
